SMMT guides UK auto suppliers to success in China

23 February 2004 #SMMT News

SMMT is to bring automotive suppliers to key business contacts in the world’s fastest growing auto market. Two powertrain seminars have been organised in China this week that will give five companies the chance to promote their products and services to a specially invited audience of 150 potential long-term partners.

Taking place in Shanghai and Beijing on 23 and 26 February, the SMMT seminars involve Lotus Engineering, PSM International, Volex Wiring, Ultraseal International and Froude Consine. The five will fly the flag for the UK, presenting expertise across the board, from powertrain design and manufacturer through to product testing.

Mark Norcliffe, SMMT’s Head of International Trade commented, ‘British expertise in engine manufacture is acknowledged the world over and in China’s competitive market this is increasingly important.

‘Through these kinds of events, SMMT aims to ensure that the UK motor industry is fully represented on the international stage, presenting the right companies to the right audience, and using our experience to help develop partnerships.’

SMMT’s international department has been active in China since the mid 90s, fostering business relationships for UK companies. The experience of the team has also helped companies navigate through some of the challenges of working in an emerging market.

On March 23 the opportunity to hear more about latest developments in China will come to the UK at a meeting of the SMMT International Business Group. The Birmingham Chamber of Commerce will host the event which takes place at the same time as the Commercial Vehicle Show at the NEC. While China will be the focus of attention, the meeting will also review the potential of other key global markets.

Note to editors:

Currently around 2.3 million engines are built in the UK each year. This is expected to rise to 3.5 million by 2005.
