Production figures released today by the Office for National
Statistics/SMMT show:
- UK car output rose by 7.4 per cent in March to 163,123 units
- Output up for seven consecutive months
- Full year forecast for car production revised upwards to 1.7 million units
Commenting on the latest car production figures, SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan said, ‘Today’s figures reflect the strength of car making in Britain following years of investment in key car plants across the country. March saw a 7.4 per cent rise, the 10th boost for UK output in the last 12 months. So far in 2004, car production is up five per cent and if the market continues to grow as expected, we will see total output hit 1.7 million units in 2004. This will be the best performance since 1999.’
UK van, truck and bus production up again
Provisional production data from the Office for National Statistics today show:
- March production figures up 17.3 per cent on March 2003
- Figures for January to March up 17.7 per cent, year on year
- Home demand gives best growth but exports up too
‘These latest figures are more good news from the CV sector,’ said Christopher Macgowan, SMMT chief executive. ‘The March figures show a strong, successful recovery for the UK’s van and truck makers in the first quarter of the year. Sustained record-breaking demand at home and the recent pick-up on the European mainland all help. Improving economic prospects in the UK suggest strong demand for the year ahead, too. We think we’ll see the annual production total hit 200,000 units this year, underlining the positive outlook for CV making in the UK.’
