Car production boost in May

23 June 2004 #SMMT News #UK Manufacturing

Production figures released today by the Office for National Statistics/SMMT show:

  • Total UK car output rose by 10,067 units in May 2004
  • Gains reported in production for home and export markets last month
  • Export production drives 2004 year to date growth, rising by 6.1 per cent

SMMT chief executive, Christopher Macgowan, commented, ‘While it is encouraging to note a boost in the number of cars made for UK buyers, export markets remain the mainstay of production growth. The picture is one which has changed dramatically in the last 10 years. Volumes have been rising steadily since a period of restructuring at the turn of the millennium and are forecast to hit 1.7 million units this year. Of these, 1.2 million, or seven out of 10 models, will be destined for export markets. This is nearly half a million more than 10 years ago. We expect this trend to continue to drive production growth in the years to come.’

May commercial vehicle production up by 20.9 per cent

  • CV output in May rose 20.9 per cent to 16,884 units
  • Year-to-date production up 16.3 per cent to 90,668 units
  • Export markets drive commercial vehicles growth

Commenting on today’s commercial vehicle production figures, SMMT chief executive, Christopher Macgowan, said, ‘Like car production, much of the growth in CV output can be attributed to strong demand for UK-built products in continental European markets. This is particularly true for light commercial vehicles made at plants in Luton and Southampton, which now account for around three quarters of all commercial vehicle output.’
