  • New car market has risen 2.7 per cent over the year-to-date, to 1,137,490 units
  • May registrations dipped 2.8 per cent – or 5,579 cars – to 194,480 units
  • The market for convertible cars continues to soar, rising 32.1 per cent to 50,203 cars from January to May 2004

  • Diesel models now account for more than 30 per cent of all new cars sold

SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan commented, ‘Until 6 June, the world motoring spotlight will continue to be focussed firmly on Birmingham’s NEC. But while many visitors will have come to The Sunday Times Motor Show Live to enjoy the new interactive features, it is also a fact that many more have the serious business of car buying in mind. We forecast that 2.6 million new cars will leave showrooms by the end of this year and you can be sure that a significant proportion of buying choices will have been made during this year’s motor show.’
