Longbridge causes fall in UK car production

Provisional output data released today by the Office for National Statistics shows:

  • Car production fell by 7.3 per cent in July, down 3.5 per cent so far in 2005
  • Export levels down just 0.6 per cent over first seven months of 2005
  • MG Rover responsible for 93 per cent of July’s production drop

‘Production in July was dominated by the loss of manufacturing at Longbridge, pitted alongside the start of the annual summer shut-down at UK car makers. Exclude MG Rover from the figures and you actually see a year-to-date increase from the other car manufacturers,’ said Christopher Macgowan, SMMT chief executive.

Home revival supports firm CV volumes

Provisional July output data released today by the Office for National Statistics shows:

  • July CV production down 4.4 per cent on July 2004
  • Home production up 1.9 per cent versus 2004
  • Third straight monthly export production drop

‘The UK numbers are very good,’ said Christopher Macgowan, SMMT chief executive. ‘Although the strong export production in 2004 has now levelled-off, home production in the second quarter of 2005 is supported by strong demand for vans and trucks and looks very encouraging.’
