Boost for car production in August

23 September 2005 #SMMT News #UK Manufacturing

Provisional output data released today by the Office for National Statistics shows:

  • Car production rose by 16.6 per cent in August
  • Export growth of 26.6 per cent the key to the month’s growth
  • MG Rover effect expected to leave full year output at 1.57 million units

‘UK car manufacturing remains strong, despite the loss of capacity at MG Rover. The boost in August production is welcome, although we still expect a fall of some 75,000 units by the end of the year. Discounting Longbridge, year-to-date production levels would be over 28,000 units up on the same period last year’, said Christopher Macgowan, SMMT chief executive.

August CV output up 5.8 per cent

Provisional output data for August released today by the Office for National Statistics shows:

  • August CV production rose 5.8 per cent on August 2004
  • Export production up 20.3 per cent on August 2004
  • Rolling annual total now at a stable 210,000 units

‘Stability remains the key for UK commercial vehicle production’, said Christopher Macgowan, SMMT chief executive. ‘Production for export and total production figures have both stabilised at high levels after recent robust growth. Solid domestic sales signal the potential for future growth, as do recovering European markets. We do, however, remain cautious as the current economic conditions are proving to be more challenging than expected for all businesses.’
