Car production for export boosts home market decline

Provisional output data released today by the Office for National Statistics shows:

‘The loss of MG Rover has not hit total car production as hard as we originally expected,’ commented SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan. ‘Output is robust, particularly for export, and we now feel the year end total could break the 1.6 million mark. The UK remains an attractive place to build high quality cars, and we should be encouraged by plants like Swindon, which has just started production of the widely acclaimed new Civic.’

Commercial Vehicle output on track

  • September CV production dipped 9.5 per cent month on month
  • Year to date output remains stable, just 0.6 per cent down on 2004
  • Rolling twelve month total stands at 208,401 units
