  • Supermini registrations rose for second month, up 2.1 per cent
  • Diesel market share hits record high for the month at 38.9 per cent
  • Compared to June 2005, new car market fell 3.6 per cent to 219,497 units
  • Overall year-to-date figures show 4.2 per cent fall to 1,241,925 units

Commenting on the June 2006 new car registration data, SMMT chief executive, Christopher Macgowan said, ‘In a market that has wobbled on the back of weaker consumer confidence and higher fuel costs, it’s not surprising that supermini cars and diesel models are picking up. New car buyers are increasingly aware of the benefits of smaller cars and those powered by highly-efficient and cleaner diesel engines. For company car drivers too, the tax benefits have never been clearer.’
