  • August new year car market down 6.1 per cent to 77,961 units
  • Year to August total down 4.3 per cent to 1,487,898 units
  • Diesel registrations post small rise, up 0.6 per cent to 30,320 in August
  • Year to date, diesel rose 2.3 per cent to 558,599 cars. 37.5 per cent market share.

‘August has become a quiet month for the new car market,’ commented SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan. ‘However, although fuel prices have fallen recently, the outlook is still clouded by economic uncertainty and the effect this has on consumer confidence. Despite a subdued market, September is still key. A host of manufacturer-led deals mean there will be plenty of opportunities for motorists to do a deal on the forecourt.’
