Car production

‘The recent announcement that the new generationVauxhall/Opel Astra will be made at Ellesmere Port on Merseyside from 2010 is further recognition of the skills and efficiency of the British car worker,’ said Christopher Macgowan, SMMT chief executive. ‘So, although total car production for March was down, we should remind ourselves that a number of manufacturers have seen positive growth during the first quarter of 2007 and that the long term prosperity for car manufacturing remains positive.’

Commercial vehicle production

‘Light commercial vehicle production was on a similar level to this time last year, but is still expected to rise over the next few months,’ said Christopher Macgowan, SMMT chief executive. ‘Only this week at the CV Show in Birmingham, LDV announced that production volumes at its plant have almost doubled since last August and productivity is up by 36 per cent. 75 extra staff have also recently been recruited. This is more good news for UK plc.’

The full report can be downloaded and this month it includes a manufacturing profile on Bentley Motors Limited in Crewe.
