Ford to add another turbine at its UK engine plant

08 April 2008 #SMMT News

Ford will add a third wind turbine at Dagenham, which will supply the extra power needed for the increased capacity of its diesel engine manufacturing site where it produces engines Fiesta and Focus models.

The two established on-site Ecotricty wind turbines have already saved 6,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually since 2004. This third unit will be able to produce 1.8 megawatts of electricity – the equivalent power needed for 1,000 domestic homes.

Dagenham output is on track to exceed one million engines this year and the extra turbine will enable Ford to remain 100 per cent wind powered at the Essex facility – meaning Ford’s lowest CO2 engines are produced using a sustainable power source.

Elsewhere in Essex, Ford’s technical centre at Dunton has also signed up for green energy. The product development HQ will cut the CO2 it produces by 65% – or 36,100 tonnes – by moving to electricity from renewable sources.
