UK seeks to strengthen automotive supply chain

31 October 2011 #SMMT News

UK-based automotive OEMs and Tier 1 manufacturers will meet over 80 supply chain companies at three specialist business building events over the coming weeks, seeking to source more locally produced components to boost the UK’s £4.5 billion automotive supply chain industry.

Supported by the Manufacturing Advisory Service, Northwest Automotive Alliance, Cheshire and West Chester Council and the Welsh Automotive Forum, SMMT’s three ‘Meet the Buyer’ events taking place at Bridgend, Chester and Melton Mowbray will demonstrate the UK automotive industry’s capabilities in  meeting the supply demands of global automotive OEMs and component manufacturers, seeking to build OEM-supplier partnerships to forge a stronger UK-based supply chain.

“For the UK fully to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the global demand for low carbon technologies, we must ensure the supply chain is sustained and strengthened to meet the demands of global vehicle manufacturers,” said SMMT Chief Executive, Paul Everitt. “Recent investment announcements will see a wave of new models being built in UK plants and events like these will help to facilitate greater local sourcing, so more of the value of these products is created here in the UK.”

Around 20 automotive ‘buying’ organisations will look to do business with some 80 UK-based suppliers over the next few weeks.  Confirmed buying organisations include BMW, BWI Group, Calsonic Kansai, Ford, General Motors, IAC Group, Kostal, Leyland Trucks, Perkins Engines and Toyoda Gosei.  The events will look to build on the success of a previous event held in April, which saw more than 200 one-to-one meetings take place between vehicle manufacturers and UK-based suppliers.

Employing more than 82,000 people in the UK supply chain, SMMT supports growth within the UK automotive sector through networking events which facilitate a stronger supply chain of Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers.
