During 2010 a partnership was formed between Caterpillar Building Construction Products (BCPD) and the Birmingham Metropolitan College to establish an Apprentice Training Academy at the Leicester facility.

The Academy will train over 675 apprenticeships for Caterpillar and other employers over an initial period of three years, making a major contribution to BCPD’s future skills needs and promoting manufacturing and engineering careers in the East Midlands.

Apprenticeships are a key channel for the automotive industry to recruit and train its workforce. In year 2009-2010, 14,530 apprentices started their placements in the automotive sector, of which over 6,000 were Advanced apprenticeships (NVQ Level 3).
