SMMT showcases automotive innovation in run-up to 2011 winner announcement

SMMT has today unveiled its latest exhibition, that showcases the best in UK automotive innovation, with a show-stopping display of a selection of entries received for its Award for Automotive Innovation, sponsored by GKN Driveline.

Designed to highlight innovative concepts, products and technologies which have the potential to transform the UK’s automotive industry, the Award has received almost 100 innovative entries since it was launched last year and over the next fortnight, leading up to the announcement of the 2011 Award winner, a selection of entries are on display at SMMT’s central London headquarters.

Included in the latest display are ABB, shortlisted this year for its Terra Dual Charge Post; Volvo UK, with its S60 with built-in autobrake and pedestrian detection technology; WABCO shortlisted this year for its WABCO TailGUARD and the only commended entry for this year’s Award, Cella Energy for its safe, low cost alternative fuel storage development project.

Commenting on the latest exhibit, Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive said, “Showcasing these cutting-edge automotive products and technologies demonstrates the strength of the automotive sector and the value of investing in UK automotive.”

Also on display is an innovative model from Allied Vehicles, called the E7 Hackney Taxi, which is jointly manufactured with Peugeot and offers significantly enhanced wheelchair access.

The winner of SMMT’s Award for Automotive Innovation 2011 will be announced on 22 November at the SMMT Annual Dinner.
