Renowned British actor, comedian and television presenter, Alexander Armstrong, has been announced as the celebrity guest speaker at the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders’ Annual Dinner, taking place on 27 November at Grosvenor House on Park Lane, London.

Armstrong, who is famous for his dry sense of humour, will provide the after-dinner address at this year’s event, which brings together friends and colleagues from across industry, government and the media for an evening of networking and discussion.

“This year’s Annual Dinner promises to be another must-attend event and I am particularly excited to be joined by Alexander Armstrong, whose unique wit and comic insight will make for an entertaining evening,” said Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive.

“Over the last 18 months, UK automotive has attracted more than £5.6 billion of international investment, securing its position at the forefront of a manufacturing-led recovery and reaffirming its importance in a low carbon future as well as the delivery of high-value jobs and skills training. With so much going on, these are exciting and challenging times for industry and SMMT’s Annual Dinner will provide a grand setting for the industry to come together to reflect on the achievements of the past year and discuss the issues going forward.”

With an established career going back to the 1990s, Armstrong has appeared in a number of popular television programmes and sitcoms including ‘The Armstrong and Miller Show’, ‘Have I got news for you?’ and ‘Doctor Who’. Most recently he has been enjoying the success of the BBC One tea-time gameshow, ‘Pointless’, which he presents with the help of his co-host, Richard Osman.

SMMT’s President, Nigel Stein, Chief Executive of GKN plc, will make the keynote address at the Dinner, reflecting on some of the recent successes enjoyed by UK automotive as well as looking ahead to what will be another important year for the sector.

The winners of SMMT’s Award for Automotive Innovation 2012, sponsored by GKN Driveline and supported by The Times, and the Autocar Courland Next Generation Award will be announced during the evening’s proceedings.
