Final fringe event held at Conservative Party Conference

08 October 2012 #SMMT News

SMMT hosted a lunch event at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham that focused on the need for an industrial strategy to boost UK competitiveness. SMMT representatives met Conservative MPs, MEPs, London Assembly Members, policy advisors and councillors.

SMMT Chief Executive Paul Everitt opened the lunch, speaking on behalf of the motor industry, outlining SMMT’s recently launched industrial strategy paper that was used to focus discussion on government-led policies to ensure continued investment in the manufacturing industries.

Gavin Williamson MP, PPS to Patrick McLoughlin as Secretary of State for Transport, was the keynote speaker, reflecting on an earlier speech by the Transport Secretary who spoke of government’s commitment to motoring and economic growth. Mr Williamson also expressed his personal experience and perspective on the automotive sector where Jaguar Land Rover is an important company in his South Staffordshire constituency.

Today’s Conservative lunch was the last of the three Party Conference fringe events hosted by SMMT, as the industry body continues its high-level engagement with key politicians and stakeholders.
