New Cosworth factory to employ world-leading tech

08 November 2013 #SMMT News

Cosworth’s new engine manufacturing facility will house some of the world’s most advanced technologies when it starts production in 2015, according to CEO Hal Reisiger.

The ‘centre of excellence’, which is expected to create around 270 jobs as a result of around £19 million investment, will assemble sophisticated high-performance engines for a number of global brands.

Chief among the new tech will be a unique-to-UK Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS), which will enable the production of different engines – whether they are V6, V8 or V12 – on the same assembly line with a simple electronic re-programming, rather than a more complex re-tooling operation.

Hal Reisiger, CEO, Cosworth Group Holdings Ltd, said, “Cosworth aims to be an exemplar for British engineering companies, applying lean processes and marketing to create demand for products and services.

“The FMS line, christened Jubilee to coincide with Cosworth’s 50th anniversary in Northampton next year, will machine high integrity metals and complex alloys that require significant expertise to achieve accurate, reproducible products. It will enable Cosworth to produce some of the world’s most advanced engines for a number of the most recognised high performance vehicle manufacturers.”
