Senior Technical Manager – Environment

Purpose of the Post:

  • To lead as SMMT environmental policy specialist on CO2, climate change, air quality and wider environmental policies and regulation affecting UK automotive, bridging technical and policy discussions
  • Lead dossiers include but are not limited to:
    • CO2 legislation (car, van and heavy-duty vehicles)
    • Climate change (low carbon agenda – vehicles & manufacturing, carbon budgets)
    • Air quality (Ultra Low Emission Zones & Clean Air Zones, emissions, transport)
  • To develop SMMT strategy, position papers, key reports and stakeholder influence in all aspects of environmental policy and regulations affecting UK automotive.
  • To represent SMMT members’ views to government and other key stakeholder fora at UK and EU level.
  • To provide accurate and effective advice, briefing and support to senior management, colleagues and members on lead dossiers, responsibilities and other projects as required.

Qualifications/Skills/Attributes required:

  • Professional engineer, scientist or environmental specialist with an honours degree in a relevant subject; post-graduate degree an advantage.
  • Highly motivated team player with the drive and ability to lead across diverse teams, projects and issues, continuously challenging and developing self and able to motivate and inspire others.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to form trusting working relationships with members, government, stakeholders and colleagues.
  • Effective communicator (written, verbal and presentational), clear, diplomatic and able to influence and adapt to relevant context and audience.
  • Proven analytical capabilities with ability to bridge technical and policy discussions, to command authority in technical, legal, political discussions and to provide accurate, visually impactful briefings, slides and analyses to senior executives and technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Competent in the use of information and communication technology commensurate with duties.
  • Good project management and organisational skills. Ability to multi-task, respond flexibly to needs of business and SMMT members, and self organise work effectively on different projects and issues.
  • Willingness to undertake regular travel, both in the UK and Europe, to attend meetings and conferences.

Main duties include:

 

  • As SMMT environmental specialist in relation to CO2, climate change, air quality and wider environmental policies within the Environment Team to provide influential expertise on core dossiers and lead the development of strategy and related SMMT policy and regulatory work at UK and EU level, supporting departmental objectives and services and SMMT business strategy.
  • To provide the secretariat to the relevant SMMT Committees/Working Groups. Pro-actively manage their agendas, papers and activities and deliver key actions arising, working with committee/working group members, SMMT colleagues, government and other stakeholders.
  • To liaise and consult with member companies, government and key stakeholders on all relevant subjects and documents, to solicit member input to create an evidence base and draft influential SMMT proposals, positions, responses, papers and presentations as required.
  • To represent SMMT views at meetings of relevant industry, governmental and stakeholder bodies in the UK and EU and influence the work of relevant organisations’ working groups as appropriate.
  • To provide regular technical information/circulars, briefing and support for members, SMMT colleagues and relevant SMMT committees and trade sections as required
  • To deal with technical and legislative enquiries from industry, the public, and outside organisations in a professional manner
  • To liaise with other teams in the Department and other SMMT departments on technical matters
  • To prepare and deliver succinct and clear briefing papers, presentations and materials for senior management
  • To keep abreast of legal, technical, policy and commercial developments in relevant fields
  • To maintain the appropriate records and files
  • To undertake any other duties or projects as directed

Salary and benefits package:
