SMMT Committees

CAV Technical Working Group

The Connected and Autonomous Vehicle Technical Working Group (CAVTWG) shall comprise representatives from SMMT members concerned with vehicle telematics (Vehicle to Infrastructure, including eCall, and Vehicle to Vehicle), Human Machine Interface (HMI), Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS) (self-sensing/self aware vehicle) and independent vehicle operations (automated or autonomous vehicles).

The CAVTWG aims to meet approximately four times a year, facilitated by the invitation of SMMT.
CAVTWG Objectives:
 
a)  Monitor and influence, UK, European and Global connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) related legislation.
b)  Monitor and influence, UK, European and International CAV Standards, including ISO/IEC, CEN/CENELEC and BS. Represent the viewpoints of SMMT members’ at the respective national and international legislation and standards forums.
c)  Promote one set of harmonised technical requirements on a global scale whether for legislation or standards, reflecting the needs of the different categories of vehicles and devices whether Original Equipment or After Market.
d)  Support members in all technical areas concerned with connected and autonomous vehicles.
e)  Provide advice and recommendations to the SMMT technical committees, inclusive of the CLCVTC, HCVTC and Engineering Committee.
f)  Ensure co-ordination with the UK government departments on matters related to connected and autonomous vehicles.
g)  Seek the guidance of the SMMT Type Approval Working Group on matters of type approval certification and vehicle registration.
h)  Seek the guidance of the SMMT Vehicle Security & Insurance Working Group on matters concerning the protection of vehicles against malicious or criminal attack through ITS enabled technologies.
