Christopher Macgowan - SMMT Chief Executive
Background:
Christopher worked for British Leyland early in his career and lived
in Canada for a number of years. He joined Massey Ferguson in 1973
and more recently Ransomes plc. He was chief executive of the Retail
Motor Industry Federation from 1996 - 1999. Christopher Macgowan joined
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders in June 1999 as chief
executive.

What drives Christopher is his determination to maintain and enhance
the reputation of the United Kingdom as a great country in which to
design, manufacture, sell, use and service automotive products. The
UK has for many years enjoyed a high level of inward investment by
many global automotive manufacturers and successfully hosts factories
owned by many of the big brands. |

Other work:
Outside his day-to-day responsibilities Christopher Macgowan has undertaken
the following activities:
- Listed in Car Magazine's top 300 biggest hitters in the motor industry,
he is a CBI Trade association council member, a Freeman of the City of
London and a Fellow of the Institute of the Motor Industry.
- He is a director of SMMT Ltd and Odette International Ltd and sits
on the management boards of SMMT Industry Forum and BEN - the automotive
industry-wide charity.
- Christopher is a member of the Department of Trade and Industry Retail
Motor Strategy Group and its Vehicle Industry Policy and European Regulation
Group.
- Partnered with government, the Home Office Vehicle Crime Reduction
Action team helps further reduce vehicle crime. Christopher is a member
of the team as well as of the government's Motorist's Forum which helps
government and industry work together to keep the motorists interests
firmly on the agenda.
- Christopher is a trustee of the National Motor Museum and a member
of the Worshipful Company of Coachmakers.
He has a passion for information technology and for many years has run the
global automotive e-mail group producing the weekly newsletter DESKTOP.COM.
Readers of DESKTOP.COM also know of his love of National Hunt Racing.
