Motor Codes Ltd has been established as a wholly-owned subsidiary of SMMT, to house all motor industry codes of practice currently operated by the Society. The Motor Industry Code of Practice for Service and Repair is the first Motor Codes brand to be launched to the public, marking a major development in consumer protection in the automotive sector. With the support of government, the National Consumer Council (NCC) and Trading Standards, the Code has completed stage one of the OFTs Consumer Codes Approval Scheme and is now active in more than 4,000 garages across the country.
The Code is significant in its opportunity for the industry to self-regulate its performance while providing motorists with the reassurance of a tough enforcement regime to ensure fair and honest treatment by garages. Backed by vehicle manufacturers and retailers, through trade associations representing the franchised and independent sectors, the Code aims to boost consumer confidence in the sector by demonstrating the responsibility of garage owners.
The Motor Industry Code of Practice for Service and Repair was developed in response to the NCCs At a Crossroads paper in which it claimed shoddy repair work was costing the consumer 4billion a year. The new Code now commits subscribing garages to:
Honest and fair services
Open and transparent pricing
Completing work as agreed
Invoices that match quoted prices
Competent and conscientious staff
A straightforward, swift complaint procedure
And offers motorists:
An online search facility allowing consumers to locate their nearest subscribing garage
A free consumer advice line
Free conciliation and low cost, legally binding arbitration
