ENX

What is ENX?

SMMT – along with its sister associations in France, Germany and Spain – is leading the motor industry development of a new electronic communications network set to revolutionise the way information passes between companies in the UK and abroad.

The European Network eXchange (ENX®) utilises the latest internet technologies and provides a single, easy to use network on which all types of transactions can be made – from initial drawings through quotes, orders and invoices. The key to the success of this approach is that it will generate one industry standard that is understood by all suppliers.

Currently, many of the companies involved in the supply chain are required to create individual network links for each company they do business with. The aim of ENX is to remove duplication by using the single electronic language of the public internet. This means that all companies, from SMEs to large vehicle manufacturers, can communicate using the same language, and suppliers that trade with a number of large companies can use ENX to reach all of them, rather than using private and expensive bespoke links.

Once the connection is in place, deals can be set up quickly – and at little cost to either party. The network is fast, easy to access and, at the same time, highly secure with a guaranteed high quality service (arrangements with major certified internet companies will ensure that quality, reliability and security are paramount). ENX is a cost-effective business solution that meets the requirements of all companies operating in the automotive sector. ENX is a scalable solution that can be adapted to a company of any size or function. For example, companies can use smaller, cheaper lines with less security devices if they do not require the functionality that some of the larger companies need to operate.

Service providers

The following providers are certified by the ENX Association and offer accesses to the ENX network.

BT Infonet, Verizon Business Services, Deutsche Telekom and its subsidiary T-Systems as well as France Télécom and its subsidiary Equant offer ENX services all over Europe and even worldwide (upon request). Currently, Telefónica only offers ENX accesses in Spain.

The offers of the different Certified Service Providers (CSPs) vary in price and in terms of service combinations. The features of the offered solutions may also differ. However, all offers are interoperable with other solutions and they are always in line with the quality standards of the ENX concept.

All CSPs are interconnected using our so-called ENX points of interconnection. This means that you can reach all your partners within the ENX network, no matter which CSP they are connected to.

Therefore, we recommend to contact all possible CSPs in order to have a variety of offers to choose from.

How to get connected?

ENX is a virtual private network and is available to companies in the automotive industry and their business partners.

To join ENX all applicants are required to register at an ENX Business Centre – such as SMMT in the UK. An online registration form will need to be filled in and if all details are correct and the application is valid, you will receive your registration number within seven working days. Once you have received your registration number and accepted the general terms and conditions of ENX registration, your process for connection may begin.

The registration process helps to guarantee the authenticity of every ENX trading partner within the ENX Network. The online registration form is a contract between your company and the ENX organisation.

Trade Exchanges

A number of internet-based companies now offer B2B Trade Exchange Services (or ‘electronic marketplaces’). A Trade Exchange allows companies to do business online with multiple trading partners by connecting to a single website.

There are a number of Exchanges serving direct and indirect materials and services. Different Exchanges which offer different services typically cover a combination of:

  • Procurement Services – selected trading partners can offer and bid for goods and services online via e-RfQ (request for quotation) and reverse auction processes.
  • Supply Chain Management – companies can share supply chain data online with chosen trading partners.
  • Collaborative Engineering – companies can share and exchange design data online with chosen design, engineering, and manufacturing partners.
  • Quality – companies can share quality planning and performance tracking data online with chosen partners.

Minimum connection requires a PC with internet connection, and registration with the Exchange. Users can pick and choose from the Exchange services on offer. Fees vary and may depend on the volume or value of business done through the Exchange.
