Design Engineering Group

The group exists to enhance the competitive position of the whole of the UK design engineering sector, both in the UK and internationally and help inform the SMMT view on the UK automotive and transport technology service industry. The group meets approximately four times a year. However, additional meetings may be held as required. The chairman is elected annually by a ballot of committee members. Membership of the Group is open to SMMT member companies fulfilling the following criteria:

Nature of business – one of the following:

• research
• design engineering
• development engineering

General requirements – all of the following:

• minimum design engineering turnover of £1 million in the previous year
• minimum trading period of two years free of financial or commercial control by a vehicle manufacturer or be able to prove that design projects are carried out for third parties without influence from the parent company
