Sustainability
| |
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders’ (SMMT) annual sustainability reports show vehicle manufacturers continue to make significant reductions in the environmental impact of their products, throughout the whole life cycle of the vehicle. The automotive industry was the first to produce an annual sustainability report and in 2009 the report celebrates its tenth anniversary. The report looks at the vehicle life cycle from production and use to recycling and details the benefits and impacts on the environment, the economy and society at each stage. Signatories include all the major vehicle makers in the UK, along with others that sell vehicles in the UK and major component manufacturers. The signatories account for 98% of vehicle production in the UK.
The UK motor industry is home to some of the cleanest and the most efficient automotive production plants in Europe according to the sector’s tenth annual sustainability report. Over the last decade, UK automotive manufacturing sites have cut CO2 emissions from production by 40.0%, water use by 45.3% - 12% better than the European average and waste to landfill by 70.5%.
