Junior Policy Officer – Graduate Internship

A new fixed term vacancy exists within the PPVL department for Junior Policy Officer for a Graduate Internship.

The placement will last 12 months, with a flexible start date around September depending on the availability of the candidate.

PURPOSE OF POST:

  • To support key aspects and tasks of SMMT’s Policy team
  • To research key policy issues related to the automotive industry in the UK
  • To draft reports and briefings for internal and external audiences
  • To assist in maintaining and updating relevant stakeholder contacts, including political affiliates.

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS / ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED BY JOB HOLDER:

  • Recent undergraduate with relevant degree (for example, Politics, International Relations, Economics, Law, History) and an interest in public affairs, politics and economics
  • Evidence of clear, concise and engaging written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience of researching political and/or economic information for inclusion within reports
  • Good time management, understanding of workload planning and ability to meet deadlines
  • Enthusiastic and willing to learn, motivated by new challenges and development of personal, professional and interpersonal skills
  • Interested in and knowledge of government and parliamentary processes in the UK and Europe and respective parliamentary processes.

MAIN DUTIES INCLUE:

Policy Team

  • To undertake research related to key political issues, including those related to political parties and UK automotive industry stakeholders
  • To assemble, interpret, and analyse government announcements, such as policy papers and consultation documents
  • To produce written reports and briefings on key issues for internal and external audiences
  • To attend relevant stakeholder events to further professional knowledge of political issues and establish contacts with SMMT members and automotive stakeholders
  • To support events organised by SMMT’s Policy Team
  • To shadow policy issues as outlined by Policy Manager
  • To support Automotive Council working groups through minute taking and meeting organisation.

Cross-departmental support

  • To participate in internal and external meetings and events on appropriate projects and tasks
  • To support the work of other teams in the department and across SMMT as and when policy input is required.
