The METS group was set up to comply with the Climate Change Agreement (CCA), an agreement set up between industry and government to achieve a discount on the climate change levy (CCL) by meeting emissions reductions targets.
The group also covers for SMMT the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS), the Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) and the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) scheme. The WG enables a forum for members to discuss these energy regimes and for SMMT to develop a consensus opinion to feed into government and other stakeholders.
Due to the nature of the working group’s membership it has also looked at other areas of manufacturing energy use and how that relates to government policy, such as Distribution Use of Supply charges, Feed-In Tariffs (FITs), etc. The WG reports to the SMMT’s Environmental Policy Committee (EPC).
