AMCO are an international logistics and supply chain organisation providing end-to-end logistics solutions, including transport via road, air, sea and rail, warehousing, customs clearance and 4pl.
Sustainability Challenges
As an international logistics organisation, AMCO operate in an industry with high carbon emissions and energy consumption through the nature of their operations. Logistics emissions from freight and warehousing account for at least 7 percent of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (McKinsey, 2024)[1] and AMCO are committed to playing a key role in a more sustainable future for logistics and their customers.
AMCO were keen to increase the visibility of their scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and energy consumption data across UK sites. Prior to working with SDG Ltd, AMCO had limited sustainability data, and wanted to see how they could measure and monitor energy and carbon emission data to make improvements. AMCO’s motivation to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption were driven by accepting their environmental responsibilities and to gain a competitive edge against other logistics organisations through more advanced sustainability practices.
Solution
SDG Ltd have been working with AMCO to provide a holistic approach to sustainability and social responsibility through the SDG Ltd Root system. This system allows organisations to track and measure performance against specific KPIs for each of the 17 UN SDGs and manage actions to improve performance. Through the Root system, SDG Ltd have provided solutions for improving sustainability and social value performance (e.g. HVO fuel, switching to sustainable energy source, reduction in consumables, implementing electric forklifts, developing charity partnerships) and performance for each action is measured against the relevant UN SDG.As well as the sustainability tracking through the Root system, SDG Ltd have also developed an annual sustainability report for AMCO from 2023-2024 summarising the annual GHG and carbon footprint data. The sustainability report will allow AMCO to compare annual changes in emissions data. A bespoke net zero roadmap has also been developed for AMCO with specific actions, identifying a path for AMCO on their journey to Net Zero by 2050.
Results and Supporting Evidence
SDG Ltd supported AMCO to obtain data for calculation of their Scope 1 and 2 emissions and have received a certificate through Planet Mark. SDG Ltd calculated that AMCO’s annual carbon footprint was 3,147 tCO2e from July 2023- June 2024 and have used data-based calculations to set a 5% reduction target.
SDG Ltd are now working with AMCO to go even further and calculate scope 3 carbon emissions from their supply chain.
