CO2 Emissions Data : Introduction
Introduction
Co2 Search
Welcome to the SMMT's CO2 emissions enquiry service. The information covers all cars registered from January 1997 to May 2001 and will be updated each month. Motorists can now discover the 'green credentials' of their company cars.

From 6 April 2002, a reform of company car taxation proposed by the Chancellor will be introduced. The Benefit in Kind (BIK) charge for company cars registered from 1 January 1998 will be calculated as a percentage of the car's price and linked to the CO2 emissions. The CO2 figure will remain unaltered for the life of the vehicle.

Details of charges for the first three years of the new system are detailed below. It has to be noted that the CO2 value is rounded down to the nearest 5gm/km.

If you would like to check the CO2 emissions of a variety of cars, SMMT can provide you with a tailored service. This is available via e-mail. Individuals searching for the CO2 emissions level for their own vehicle should use the search facility.

The SMMT is providing this Internet service under an agreement with the Inland Revenue. For details of the reform of company car taxation see www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/cars.

Further information on the Graduated Vehicle Excise Duty scheme for new cars registered from March 2001 can be obtained from the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency web site http://www.dvla.gov.uk/.

The authoritative CO2 emissions figure will be shown on the vehicle registration document (V5) for new cars registered from March 2001.

In addition to this service the SMMT offers a series of statistical reports linking the CO2 value to volumes of registrations, fleet/private ownership, petrol/diesel split and market segment.
