SMMT keeps a keen eye on EU new car CO2 legislation

2 Dec 2008

A preliminary compromise on the EU new car CO2 legislation has been reached between MEPs and the French presidency of the European Council.

Although encouraged that discussions are nearing completion, SMMT is concerned about the significant challenges that further strict legislation will bring the automotive industry in the current economic climate.

The compromise must now gain the endorsement of the full European Council and will be put to a first reading vote at the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg on 17 December.

Over the past decade, the automotive industry has invested heavily and made significant advances in reducing the environmental impact of its products – average UK new car CO2 emissions have fallen from nearly 190g/km in 1997 to 158.6g/km in September 2008, a fall of 16.4%.
