Reading Buses is one of the first bus companies in the UK to buy a fleet of 34 compressed natural gas buses.
In a joint announcement, Reading Buses and Barclays say the new environmentally friendly fleet of single deck buses will provide enhanced levels of service to meet the needs of increasing passenger numbers.
Tony Pettitt, Director of Resources at Reading Buses, said, “Barclays has provided asset financing for the second batch of fourteen buses which has made the deal possible.
“They are strongly supporting our increased development in vehicle fleet, products and services following the start of our partnership with them a year ago.
“As a result of their backing we can improve the quality – and quantity – of the services we are able to provide across our network.”
He added, “The investment in a new fleet of environmentally friendly buses fuelled by compressed natural gas follows significant growth in passenger journeys following the hugely successfully introduction of our Solo travel card for under 19s.”
Reading Buses Chief Engineer John Bickerton said the introduction of gas buses had represented a significant development in offering customers a quieter and smoother ride while at the same time reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.
David Rushbrook, Barclays Relationship Director, Corporate Banking, said, “This deal is important to us as it demonstrates we have the appetite to work closely with companies such as Reading Buses who are customer-focussed and forward thinking.
“We’re pleased to be working with Reading Buses in their ambition to deliver a first class passenger service, which is more efficient to run and of course environmentally-friendly.”
