Thermo King has launched its hybrid drive trailer into the market, as a low-noise and low-emission option for urban areas.
Originally shown as a concept in 2016 and demonstrated at the 2017 Commercial Vehicle Show, the SLXi Hybrid uses the Frigoblock EnviroDrive system, combining a generator driven by the diesel engine and an inverter to deliver a constant flow of electric power. The setup allows the SLXi Hybrid to run in electric mode when connected to a three-phase power supply when at base and also when out on the road, ensuring deliveries can be made with the diesel engine switched off for minimal environmental impact.
The haulage firm MJ Transport, based in Germany, undertook an eight-week trial of the hybrid system to transport fresh and frozen goods from its base in Dortmund to the Netherlands and Belgium. During the trial, the semi-trailer needed to be refueled only once compared to every one to two weeks with a standard refrigeration unit, while the tractor unit’s consumption increased by just 0.6 litres per 100km.
“The SLXi Hybrid is a truly innovative technology that answers our customers’ demand for solutions that will give them easier access to restricted, low-emission urban areas while lowering their environmental footprint and operating costs in the same time,” said Laurent Debias, product management leader at Thermo King and Frigoblock.”
