A Welsh construction supplier has put a new Volvo FL 250 4×2 with an X-High chassis into operation to provide reliability and ground clearance on the rural roads of the Swansea Valley.

Lliw Building Supplies’s new 18-tonne rigid also features steel suspension, Volvo’s D8K engine that produces 250 hp, a day cab with a steel safety cage design, and a stair-like two-step wide entry that provides ease of access for the driver.

The replacement vehicle, which joins the Pontardawe firm’s three Volvos in its now four-strong truck fleet, will be used five and a half days a week for multi-drop deliveries to customers in the surrounding area.

The FL 250 is fitted with lightweight dropside bodywork and a rear mounted Hiab grab crane, supplied by Neath Coach Bodywork, and is backed by a five-year Volvo Gold Contract and supplied under a hire purchase agreement with Volvo Financial Services.

Meanwhile, all servicing and maintenance to be carried out by the Truck and Bus Wales and West depot in Swansea.

Geraint Llewelyn, Managing Director at Lliw Building Supplies, said: “We have a good relationship with Wales and West – they have been taking care of our trucks for a very long time and we find the service amazing.

“When you have a small fleet, you need the vehicles on the road during working hours. So, we have the trucks serviced overnight to ensure they are ready for the morning – which means we have no scheduled downtime whatsoever.”
