DHL is planning to step up its transition to heavy electric vehicles with 44 new Volvo trucks deployed on routes in the UK and across Europe.

The international delivery service’s intended order includes 40 electric Volvo FE and Volvo FLs, which will be used for package deliveries in urban transport.

The first trucks have already been ordered, with six in operation with DHL Parcel UK and two with DHL Freight.

The company has also begun using Volvo trucks for regional distribution, starting with four Volvo FM electric trucks in the UK.

DHL said its decision to ramp up its transition to zero emission vehicles was influenced by its positive experience with the Volvo FL Electric truck, which has been operating in last mile deliveries in the West End shopping district in London since late 2020.

This vehicle was the first fully electric commercial heavy truck used for urban logistics in the UK.

Roger Alm, President at Volvo Trucks, said: “DHL is an important global logistics provider, committed to reducing its impact on climate change.

“Together we can make a difference for the better and I’m proud we will work in the spirit of partnership, aiming to reach our science-based targets to reduce our climate impacts.”

Pablo Ciano, Executive Vice President Corporate Strategy at Deutsche Post DHL Group, said: “We are committed to meet growing customer demand for green and sustainable solutions and achieve our long-term goal of net zero emissions by 2050.”
