Tell us about the new bus tyre that Continental has launched?
We unveiled our most advanced city bus tyre to date – the Conti Urban HA 5 NXT – at the Busworld Europe trade fair in Brussels last month.
Constructed with up to 60% renewable, recycled and International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus mass-balance-certified materials, the Conti Urban HA 5 NXT is ideal for fleets looking for an efficient solution for urban traffic requirements.
By reducing rolling resistance by 25%, it enables electric buses to operate more efficiently and extend their range by up to 15%. Also, the optimised tread design reduces noise and meets EU label class A for external rolling noise.
At the same time, the newly developed tread compound delivers up to 15% higher mileage compared to the Conti Urban HA 3, while still maintaining the proven EU label class B rating for wet grip.
Describe the other features of the new tyre?
In addition to the materials used, the tyre stands out thanks to its technical design. The densely arranged sipes ensure excellent grip, lane-keeping and high braking performance. This is particularly important for electric buses with recuperative brakes.
The Conti Urban HA 5 NXT is also equipped with the latest generation tyre sensors. The pre-installed sensors enable the quick onboarding of a fleet into Continental’s digital tyre management system ContiConnect, providing fleet managers with insights into tyre pressure, temperature and mileage. This enables predictive maintenance, reduces downtime, and lowers operating costs.
What size is the new tyre available in?
The Conti Urban HA 5 NXT is available in size 275/70 R 22.5. It also comes with sensors as standard for original equipment, which are available on request for the replacement market. The tyre complements the portfolio around the Conti Urban HA 5, which was introduced in 2024, and offers fleet operators a targeted selection for urban public transport.
How does Continental help fleets and manufacturers meet environmental and operational requirements?
Our customers expect solutions that are both environmentally and economically sound, in both original equipment and replacement business. The Conti Urban HA 5 NXT meets these expectations, combining resource-saving material selection, high energy efficiency, and a long service life.
We are consistently aligning our development for the bus segment with the trends of urbanisation and emission-free mobility. According to the EU authority Eurostat, about 80% of Europeans will live in urban centres by 2030. This makes low-noise and low-emission transport solutions and digital traffic management systems indispensable.
We are driving forward innovative technologies and more sustainable solutions throughout our entire value chain – from sourcing more sustainable materials to recycling end-of-life tyres. By 2030, we aim to increase the share of renewable and recycled materials in our tyre production to at least 40% – while always maintaining the same high safety and performance characteristics.
