Five minutes with… Harald Seidel, President, DAF Trucks

8 Jan 2026
Tell us about DAF’s New Generation XD and XF Electrics, recently awarded International Truck of the Year 2026 at the Solutrans exhibition in France?

Both innovative vehicle series are based on the multi-award-winning XD and XF series, and offer the same unrivalled quality, efficiency and safety combined with astounding driver comfort.

The XD and XF Electric trucks are powered by PACCAR’s advanced EX-D1 and EX-D2 e-motors, delivering outputs from 170 kW (230 hp) to 350 kW (480 hp). With modular battery packs ranging from 210 to 525 kWh, the 4×2 and 6×2 tractor and rigid vehicles offer zero-emission ranges of over 500 kilometres on a single charge, and even over 1,000 kilometres per day through optimal charging planning.

Receiving the most prestigious award in the truck industry is another recognition of the hard work of the entire DAF organization to deliver first class products and services to our customers.

Describe the typical applications for the trucks?

The XD and XF Electric trucks are designed for both city and regional distribution and long-distance applications, combining excellent aerodynamics with a low cab position, ultra-low window beltlines, and advanced digital camera systems for superior safety and visibility.

PACCAR EX-D1 drivelines are ideal for supplying shops and collecting containers and waste, for example.

The extremely aerodynamic design of the trucks is an important factor in their excellent energy efficiency and operating range. This aerodynamic and tapered design of the cab, with its rounded corners and windscreen, and lack of seams and panel gaps, ensures the least possible wind resistance, which translates directly into the lowest possible energy consumption. The side skirts, deflectors, collars and aerodynamic bottom plate under the cab also play a role, as do the digital cameras that replace the mirrors.

What criteria did the trucks have to meet to win the award?

In line with the rules of the International Truck of the Year (IToY) organisation, the title is awarded annually to the vehicle introduced in the previous 12 months that has made the greatest contribution to road transport efficiency. The assessment covers a range of criteria, including technological innovation, comfort, safety, drivability, energy efficiency, environmental performance and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

Winning the International Truck of the Year 2026 with our XD and XF Electric models is a moment of pride for all DAF employees

This recognition underlines our commitment to drive the future of zero-emission transport through innovation, quality, and sustainability.

What did the expert jury say about the trucks?

The jury of 23 leading commercial vehicle journalists from across Europe praised the XD and XF Electric truck series for their exceptional energy efficiency, refined yet powerful driveline, and advanced technical architecture. Furthermore, the vehicles were recognised for their long driving ranges, advantageous LFP battery technology, and superior driver comfort.

We are thrilled that the jury acknowledged the vehicles’ efficiency, safety, and exceptional driver comfort.

Also, it is the third win for DAF in only five years, after the New Generation XF/XG/XG+ and XD became International Truck of the Year for 2022 and 2023.
