Government cuts cost of electric trucks by up to £120,000

8 Jan 2026

Hauliers are being given discounts of up to £120,000 on new electric trucks following an extra £18 million announced by the government to increase the Plug-in Truck Grant until March 2026.

This move is part of a £318 million plan for green freight, to help accelerate uptake of zero-emission trucks and support delivery of the UK’s climate commitments.

The PiTG is designed to help offset the higher purchase price of electric HGVs, enabling operators to benefit from lower day-to-day running costs compared with diesel vehicles.

It builds on the more than £120m already invested through the zero emission heavy goods vehicle and infrastructure demonstrator programme, which is supporting the introduction of about 300 zero-emission HGVs on UK roads by March 2026.

Under the revised scheme, grants will support:

  • trucks from 4.25 tonnes to 12 tonnes by up to £20,000;
  • trucks from 12 tonnes to 18 tonnes by up to £60,000;
  • trucks from 18 tonnes to 26 tonnes by up to £80,000; and
  • trucks over 26 tonnes by up to £120,000

Minister for Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation, Keir Mather, said: “We’re backing British businesses to go green by making electric lorries more affordable, helping hauliers to make the switch whilst turbocharging growth, investment and jobs in the sector.

“Our proposals will provide the certainty the industry has been calling for so that Britain becomes the best place for green investment.”

The government has also announced it will launch a consultation on the regulatory roadmap to phase out sales of new non-zero emission HGVs by 2040.
