SMMT statement on government’s Critical Minerals Strategy
Bringing down the sky-high cost of energy faced by UK Automotive would arguably be the biggest boost to the sector’s competitiveness and global attractiveness. This consultation is a necessary step but must deliver quickly for businesses of all sizes – from the suppliers fuelling factory lines with critical components, to manufacturers assembling them into high-value vehicles for global export. As we transition away from fossil fuel vehicles to the production of electric vehicles and batteries, energy costs become an even more important investment factor so the British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme should send a clear signal to investors worldwide that the UK is open for business.
