In accordance with requirements stipulated in the 2009 Waste Batteries and Accumulators regulation, vehicle owners can dispose of their waste batteries free of charge. However, if the battery is part of the vehicle at the end of its life, there is no need to dispose of it separately.
There are three main types of batteries considered by this legislation:
- Automotive batteries (vehicle starter batteries)
- Industrial batteries used as source of power for propulsion in electric and hybrid vehicles
- Portable batteries (sealed battery that can easily be carried and is neither an automotive nor an industrial battery. E.g. remote control locking key batteries)
Please be aware that disposal of waste industrial and automotive batteries by landfill or by incineration is banned in the UK since 1 January 2010.
