News from Iveco: Barry-based tanker specialist PM Rees & Sons has taken delivery of its first ever Iveco heavy trucks, supplied by Glenside Commercials, which took over the Iveco sales franchise for South East Wales in April 2013.

The company’s order for three Stralis Hi-Road AT440S46TX/P high-roof tractor units follows Managing Director Peter Rees’ first glimpse of the new Stralis range at the CV Show in 2013, and the appointment of Glenside Commercials to represent the Iveco brand locally.

“We visited the Iveco stand and we liked what we saw,” he says. “We’d previously been a two-marque fleet but we’ve been gradually replacing one of the brands due to recurrent engine problems. It left an opening for another truck manufacturer and the Stralis Hi-Road appears a strong contender. We’re looking forward to putting the new Ivecos through their paces and seeing how they perform.

“We’ve also been very impressed with the whole team at Glenside. Their facilities are first class – they must be operating from one of the most modern truck dealerships in the country.”

Built at Iveco’s European heavy truck factory in Madrid, the Stralis Hi-Roads will operate at up to 44 tonnes with a mix of chemical tanker trailers, as well as with skeletal trailers carrying either tank containers or regular ISO containers for general haulage. The vehicles join a fleet of approximately 50 trucks and will operate nationwide, as well as occasional European work.

Expected to cover up to 125,000 km in their first year, the Iveco trio will remain on the fleet for four years and have each been built to full ADR-specifications.

The new Stralis Hi-Road cab is purpose-designed for distribution and fleet operations as well as medium to long-haul missions, and combines sleek aerodynamics, a modern cab and the latest technology to help operators reduce running costs and enhance the on-board package for drivers.

Each Stralis is powered by an EEV-rated FPT Industrial 10.3 litre Cursor 10 engine, which is capable of producing up to 460 hp between 1,550 and 2,100 rev/min, plus 2,100 Nm of torque between 1,050 and 1,550 rev/min, driven through a EuroTronic automated transmission.

Established in 1977, PM Rees & Sons’ tanker expertise extends to operating its own SQAS-accredited three-bay Tankwash on-site in Barry, where the Stralis tractors will be based.
