Diesel engine manufacturer Cummins has announced two new environmental sustainability goals as it seeks to reduce its carbon footprint.
The global supplier will help customers to reduce fuel usage and also target a reduction in its own CO2 levels throughout its network.
By partnering with customers to improve the fuel efficiency of its products, Cummins hopes to reach an annual reduction of 3.5 million metric tonnes of CO2 by 2020.
Cummins will target 20% of its customer base, cumulatively saving them 1.6 billion gallons of fuel, the equivalent of taking 3.2 million cars off the road.
“With millions of engines and generators in service around the world, there’s no question in my mind that Cummins has the global reach to make a difference for the environment,” said Brian Mormino, Cummins’ Executive Director Worldwide Environmental Strategy and Compliance.
The firm will also use the most efficient methods to move goods across its network, aiming for a 10% reduction in the CO2 per kg of goods moved by 2020.
Cummins’ environmental sustainability plan is part of a “process of continual improvement”, says Mormino. “Cummins will continue to develop more strategies as its efforts mature, and set new goals after we meet existing targets.”
