DPD will kick off a trial with electric vehicles from Volta Trucks in early 2021.

The trucks, exclusively powered by electric, will operate within London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone and support DPD’s Westminster micro-depot strategy.

The Volta Zero 16-tonne electric vehicle will be subjected to the pilot test.

According to DPD Group UK Ltd. CSR general manager, Olly Craughan, the vehicle is, “an ideal fit for our Urban Logistics strategy”, as it mirrors the company’s own ambition to be “the UK’s leader in sustainable delivery.”

Volta describes the Zero as being the “world’s first purpose-built full-electric large commercial vehicle.”

Rob Fowler, Chief Executive Officer of Volta Trucks, continues, “The Volta Zero’s full-electric, zero-emission operation is perfectly suited to DPD’s distribution requirements within London’s strict Ultra Low Emission Zone, delivering parcels to Central London’s customers in a clean and efficient way.”

The company states that the Volta Zero pilot will provide DPD, other road users and London’s residents with a range of benefits. The vehicle has a cab design that offers the driver enhanced visibility, which provides safer operation and an improved view of potential hazards in densely populated areas. The quiet full-electric drivetrain also means that DPD will be able to operate the vehicles in an efficient, 24-hour operation without causing disturbance.
