Amazon has added five battery electric DAF trucks to its UK middle mile fleet, as the global company decarbonises its delivery services.

The 37-tonne gross combination weight DAF CF Electric tractor units are the first electric middle mile delivery trucks operated by Amazon in Europe, able to clock up more than 300 miles a day with smart planning and fast charging.

The global delivery company says the new vehicles will travel 100,000 miles per year and prevent about 170 tonnes of CO2 being emitted annually.

The DAF CF Electric has a 210 kW electric motor that draws power from a 350 kWh battery pack and full charging takes about 75 minutes using a charging station with a capacity of 250 kW.

The unit is available as a 4×2 tractor unit and 6×2 rigid truck with steered trailing axle for maximum manoeuvrability.

The purchase forms part of Amazon’s Shipment Zero programme, its goal to deliver 50% of its shipments with carbon neutral transport by 2030.

John Boumphrey, Country Manager at Amazon UK, said: “Amazon is one of the first companies in the world to put electric heavy goods trucks on the road.

“We’re committed to becoming net-zero carbon by 2040, and this is a milestone as we continue to decarbonize our transportation network.”

Eelco van Veen, DAF Trucks’ Director Fleet Sales, added: “The DAF CF Electric has been developed in response to rising demand for better air quality and lower CO2 emissions in the transportation sector.”
