Work begins on £2m Pelican facility amid ‘huge growth’ in electric bus demand

Pelican Engineering has begun work on its new Yutong Bus showroom and workshop facility in West Yorkshire.

The new 20,000ft2 premises in Castleford will be used to fit out, commission and support new and used Yutong fully electric passenger vehicles, quadrupling the capacity of Pelican’s UK base.

With a quarter of its 172-strong team already working in the Yutong division, Pelican said the new facility will also create more jobs in the electrification of the bus industry.

The new site will complement Pelican’s existing showroom on Altofts Lane, which will continue to be used for bus work and as an overflow space for its DAF dealership.

The new facility will have a BREEAM Excellent standard and be equipped with sufficient power supply for four high-performance DC chargers in line with plans for it to become a publicly accessible charging station.

Construction is due to be completed by November.

“In recent years, Pelican has seen huge growth in Yutong sales as more and more local authorities and bus operators transition to clean zero emission vehicles,” said Richard Crump, Managing Director at Pelcan Engineering.

“From zero vehicles in 2014, we are now approaching 1,000 Yutong buses and coaches sold in the UK, and our new facility is needed to enable us to carry out the internal fit-out of the ever-increasing number of electric buses we are now supplying.

“As a fourth generation Yorkshire family business with a heritage of over 100 years, we are proud to be continuing to invest in the region and further boosting the local economy.”
