A vacancy exists for a full-time fully qualified Legal Counsel (one-year fixed term) to support SMMT’s Data Intelligence Project.
PURPOSE OF POST:
- To be the lead contact for the contract lifecycle, including contract coordination, processes and issues arising under the SMMT Data Intelligence (SDI) business
- To provide contract and general commercial legal advice and support to SDI, with a focus on the management and drafting of advice on contracts for the purchase and sale of data and sales queries (bespoke and online)
- To provide occasional legal support to other SMMT in-house projects including research on Compliance, Data Protection, Procurement, Litigation and Intellectual Property matters
- To provide periodic support for the provision of legal updates, circulars and information for the SMMT Legal Committee, Data Protection Working Group and other related meetings
QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS / ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED BY JOB HOLDER:
- UK qualified solicitor or barrister
- Experience: one/two years post-qualification commercial experience, in-house or in private practice, familiar with commercial pressures
- Demonstrable commercial awareness
- Ability to communicate and argue confidently, fluently, precisely and concisely, orally and in writing
- Ability to analyse, to organise, to plan, to research, to think critically, logically and constructively
- A reliable, highly organised individual, with an eye for detail
- Flexible, able and willing to undertake SDI project work on a timely progressive basis, both solo and in collaboration and support with the SDI team or members of the team (remotely and in person)
- A self-starter, but also able to follow instructions and work effectively without constant supervision
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with ability to effectively communicate with SDI colleagues, customers and stakeholders at all levels for both contentious and non-contentious matters
- Have an appreciation of commercial confidentiality, or sensitivity, of some information and importance of avoiding damage to SDI or SMMT’s image, profile or reputation
- IT (preferably Microsoft) competence and willingness to learn and use new technologies
MAIN DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Managing the process and undertaking the drafting/negotiating/approving SDI contracts with external suppliers or customers, in accordance with instructions
- At the request of the Business Development Manager or Head of Legal, to include direct contact with existing or potential customers to resolve contract issues arising
- To work in close collaboration with the SDI team to ensure timely progress on resolving and closing legal issues arising, especially issues concerning the sale of data under licence
- Addressing any contentious issues (whether contract/negotiation/licence) or disputes which may arise and summarising the recommended course of action, where appropriate to the Head of Legal for further instructions
- Liaise and negotiate with all relevant parties (internal and external) as required on SDI projects
- Researching and advising on legal matters, for example new or forthcoming legislation relevant to the SDI business or the automotive sector
- Supporting the provision of regulatory updates, circulars and information for SMMT members through the Legal Committee, Data Protection Working Group and other meetings
