SMMT President Mike Baunton today called for the motor industry to build on the centenary of the Society as a springboard for the UK to make a step-change in improvement in innovation and promoting itself to the world. A survey conducted amongst the leading global vehicle manufacturers and suppliers by SMMT member Automotive Advisors and Associates identified these as a key issue for the UK to address in order to secure new business for the sector*.

Looking to the future, the dates for the next British International Motor Show were announced as 25 May to 6 June 2004. The move forward from autumn to early summer reflects the wishes of both exhibitors and visitors to enjoy better weather and a greater opportunity for live action and external presentations.

Highlighting the vital partnership with government to develop what is still the UK’s largest manufacturing sector, the SMMT President welcomed the implementation of the Automotive Innovation and Growth Team (AIGT) recommendations. These include development of the low carbon partnership and the review of regulations affecting the sector to help the industry, but they must be progressed more rapidly.
