Nissan’s Sunderland plant to recruit up to 200 Specialists

19 June 2012 #SMMT News

The Nissan Sunderland Plant, which produces more than one in three UK-built cars, is now looking for up to 200 talented and specialist staff in areas including Production Management, Engineering, Maintenance, Information Systems and Logistics. The plant will host a Specialist recruitment day this Saturday, as it gears up for the busiest period in its 26-year history.

Preparations are well under way for the introduction of four new models recently announced for production in the UK, including the 100% electric Nissan LEAF. Also confirmed for the plant are the next generation Nissan Qashqai, a new B-segment car based on the INVITATION concept and a new C-segment hatchback.

These exciting new cars will join the Nissan Juke at Sunderland, with investment in this new model line up topping £921 million. The latest member of the Juke family – the Juke Nismo – was unveiled last week and will take Nismo’s legendary performance DNA from racetrack to road from next year.

Kevin Fitzpatrick, Nissan’s Vice President for Manufacturing in the UK, said, “The popularity of the Nissan Qashqai and the Nissan Juke has meant our Sunderland Plant has achieved record production in each of the last two years, both of which were UK industry records.

“Four new models have now been announced for the plant. As a result we are recruiting for up to 200 specialist staff. I would encourage anyone interested in furthering their career at the UK’s biggest car plant to attend this Specialist recruitment day or to visit our website www.careersatnissan.co.uk for all current vacancies.”

Recent model announcements at Nissan Sunderland Plant will result in more than 3,000 new jobs being created in the UK automotive sector within the next two years – 625 at Nissan and the remainder across the supply base.

Once recruitment for both models is complete, the Sunderland Plant workforce will stand at a record 6,225 supporting an overall annual plant volume of more than 550,000 units and triggering the need for Sunderland Plant to implement an additional shift. This will see both production lines operating ‘around the clock’ for the first time in the plant’s 26-year history.
