SMMT welcomes government backing for Motor Codes

13 December 2012 #SMMT News

SMMT welcomes the Department for Transport’s support for OFT/TSI Codes of Practice in its response to the Motorists’ Forum Garage Customer Experience report.

Transport Minister Stephen Hammond MP, has today urged motorists “to find out if their local garage has been approved by the codes to ensure they are getting a fair service and value for money.” That is why Motor Codes was established, and it remains one of only two OFT approved Codes of Practice in the automotive sales, service and repair sector, alongside the Bosch Car Service network.

SMMT Chief Executive Paul Everitt commented, “It was always our ambition for it to be the norm for garages to sign up to Motor Codes’ OFT(TSI)-backed scheme so it is pleasing to see the Minister reiterate that as the official government view. It is the only mass market Code which demonstrates a proven marker of a good quality garage, with quality assurance and feedback processes in place.

“We are also pleased that government has indicated that those garages who have signed up to Motor Codes will start to receive the benefit from ‘earned recognition’ within VOSA’s risk assessment regime. We look forward to seeing how VOSA plans to reflect that reduced level of risk in due course.”
