Operators can now apply for HGV Safety Permits a year ahead of the compulsory enforcement of London’s new Direct Vision Standard on 26 October 2020.
Direct Vision Standard will target vehicle blind spots, with vehicles being awarded a star rating based on how much a driver can see directly through the windows of their cab. This system will rate vehicles from zero (lowest) to five (highest). HGVs will need to meet a minimum ‘one-star’ rating by the time enforcement begins to enable them to operate in London or will need to fit ‘Safe System’ measures to improve the vehicle’s safety.
Once enforced next year, HGV operators who fail to meet these new minimum safety standards and obtain a permit will be issued a penalty charge for driving in the capital. The Direct Vision Standard will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will be enforced within the Greater London Boundary.
