Environmental Policy Manager

A new vacancy now exists within the Public Policy & Vehicle Legislation department for an Environmental Policy Manager.

PURPOSE OF POST:

  • To develop and lead the SMMT activities in the areas of circular economy, battery regulation, chemicals, waste and resources management within the Environment Team, taking pro-active responsibility for shaping policy and regulation in these areas, and engaging SMMT members, colleagues and stakeholders accordingly.
  • To secure the evidence base in order to inform and develop SMMT strategy, position papers, key reports and stakeholder influence on matters of legislation and standardisation affecting the design, construction and use of vehicles, industrial engines, components and accessories.
  • To represent SMMT members’ views to UK Government and to other key stakeholders at a local, national and international level.
  • To provide accurate and effective advice, briefing and support to senior management, colleagues and members on lead dossiers, responsibilities and other projects as required.
  • Lead dossiers include, but are not limited to:
    • Circular economy – barriers and opportunities relating to the longer-term ambition of full circularity within the automotive industry,
    • EV battery sustainability – development and implementation of UK and EU policies and regulations covering battery sustainability and life cycle, including end of life, re-use and transportation of damaged batteries,
    • Chemicals & REACH – automotive use of confirmed and potential UK/EU-registered hazardous materials and opportunities for substitution.

 

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS / ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED BY JOB HOLDER:

  • Education to degree or equivalent professional qualification in a relevant environmental, science or engineering discipline.
  • Relevant experience of circularity, battery technologies and their sustainability gained from relevant experience in industry, government or environmental consultancy.
  • Effective communicator at all levels (written, verbal and presentational), able to effectively lead meetings, to command authority in technical/legal/political discussions and diplomatically exert influence and persuasion as required.
  • Proven analytical skills, demonstrable knowledge and experience of at least one of the key dossiers, and of technically-based legislation in order to provide interpretation and guidance. Awareness of the commercial and environmental context.
  • Good interpersonal skills, and ability to form good working relationships with people of varying backgrounds.
  • Highly self-motivated, able to work effectively with little supervision, good management and organisational skills, ability to multi-task.
  • Flexibility, willingness to learn, be involved and adapt.  Competent in the use of information and communication technology commensurate with duties.
  • Willingness to travel, both in the UK and internationally, to meet members and attend meetings and conferences.

 

MAIN DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • To lead on and influence circular economy policies and developments, both nationally and internationally, through engagement with members and other stakeholders involved in the field.
  • To lead on battery regulations, both nationally and internationally, through engagement with members and other stakeholders involved in the field, assessing the implications for the UK automotive sector and influencing future policy.
  • To lead on UK REACH implementation for the UK automotive sector.
  • To provide the secretariat to the relevant SMMT Committees/Working Groups. Pro-actively manage their agendas, papers and activities and deliver key actions arising, working with committee/working group members, SMMT colleagues, government and other stakeholders.
  • To liaise and consult with member companies, government and key stakeholders on all relevant subjects and documents; to solicit member input to create an evidence base and draft influential SMMT proposals, positions, responses, papers and presentations as required.
  • To represent SMMT views at meetings of relevant industry, governmental and stakeholder bodies in the UK and international arena and influence the work of relevant organisations’ working groups as appropriate.
  • To provide regular technical information/circulars, briefing and support for members, SMMT colleagues and relevant SMMT committees and trade sections as required.
  • To keep abreast of legal, technical, policy and commercial developments in relevant fields and deal with enquiries from industry, the public and outside organisations.
