MVRIS: First registration of new vehicles
The Motor Vehicle Registration Information System (MVRIS) is the most comprehensive and authoritative source of new registration details in the UK. The database is the result of co-operation between the SMMT, vehicle manufacturers / importers and the DVLA. (Motorcycles and agricultural vehicles are outside the scope of MVRIS as these are handled by separate trade associations: MCIA and AEA respectively).
SMMT’s registration figures provide unique insight to the UK vehicle market. On the fourth working day of each month, new vehicle registration figures are released on the SMMT web site, split by make and vehicle type.
Detailed analysis of the figures can be purchased through SMMT’s Automotive Information Services (AIS) department via the links below, including regional / postcode information, sales type (private / fleet / business), CO2 emissions, etc.

New UK Car Registrations
A monthly summary of all first registrations recorded of new cars by MVRIS car market segment and model range within a given month, a cumulative total for the year and a comparison of data collected for the same period in the previous year.
MVRIS Car Market Segment and Sales Type
A monthly summary of all first registrations recorded of new cars by MVRIS car market segment and sales type: Business, Fleet and Private.
Commercial Vehicle Specific Body Type
For a specified body type, the report details the number of registrations recorded in each market sector by make within a given month and a cumulative total for the year and a comparison of data collected for the same period in the previous year.
Cars by Detailed Model Variant
This detailed report contains total registrations for each car model variant recorded in a given month and includes country of origin, number of doors, body style, engine capacity, number of gears, transmission and fuel type. Also contains cumulative total for the year and a comparison of data collected for the same period in the previous year.
LCVs by Detailed Model Variant
This detailed report contains total registrations for each light commercial model variant recorded in a given month and includes country of origin, engine capacity, transmission, weight and fuel type. Also contains cumulative total for the year and a comparison of data collected for the same period in the previous year.
HCVs by Detailed Model Variant
This detailed report contains total registrations for each heavy commercial model variant recorded in a given month and includes country of origin, drive type, driving axle, weight and power BHP. Also contains cumulative total for the year and a comparison of data collected for the same period in the previous year.
Buses and Coaches by Detailed Model Variant
This detailed report contains total registrations for each bus and coach model variant recorded in a given month and includes country of origin, drive type, driving axle, weight, body style and vehicle sub type. Also contains cumulative total for the year and a comparison of data collected for the same period in the previous year.
